Vol 2, No 8

As temperatures start rising for much of the country hard hit with frigid temperatures it’s not over as the effects of the winter storm continue, broken pipes, flooded homes and fields, lost production of livestock and even loss of valuable livestock. Many people were without water and electricity or rolling blackouts for several days.

NCBA and other groups are working with USDA and Congress to determine which disaster assistance programs will be available. As we wait for further information on assistance programs be sure to keep the most accurate records you can on death loss, property damage, and other financial impacts to your ranch and home.

Email Scam Alert
Some of you may have received a gift card email scam this last week. These are the types of solicitations the AWA will never do. If you receive anything that seems questionable please give the AWA office a call before responding.

Complete Animal Recording Enrollment
For herds enrolled in the Complete Animal Recording Program (Standard Herds) there are two inventory periods, Spring and Fall calving herds.

Spring Herd enrollment is active now. Many producers took advantage of the early enrollment. I want to remind members that each month the enrollment fee increases and encourage you to complete your enrollment online before fees increase next month. The early enrollment deadline of January 31 has passed. The Spring Herd Enrollment fee schedule and deadlines are below.

• $27 if enrolled before February 1
• $33 if enrolled between February 1 and February 28
• $36 if enrolled between March 1 and March 31
• $39 if enrolled between April 1 and April 30
• $42 if enrolled between May 1 and December 31

Invoices to be paid prior to the last day of the following month or fees increase by $3 for each month past due.

Fall Herd Enrollment begins May 1, 2021. If you have any questions or need assistance enrolling your cows please call the AWA office, we will be happy to assist you.

Learn More About EPD
Trait descriptions, how to read the EPD, information on accuracy, percentile rank tables and guidelines for the publication of EPD are all available, simply follow this link. https://wagyu.org/members/genetic-evaluation/

Why some performance information is not used in genetic evaluations.
Genetic evaluations are an analysis of the performance data reported for a population, in this case the population of Wagyu reported to the American Wagyu Association.

Without performance data, corresponding EPD cannot be computed. As many producers are now into their spring calving season it’s important to start the data collection process, birth dates, calving ease, birth weights, dam’s teat and udder scores are all valuable information to collect during the calving season. Also, proper identification of calves at birth can save time and money later as you prepare to record and register calves.

For more information on collecting and reporting information to be used in the Wagyu National Cattle Evaluation please refer to the Wagyu Performance Guidelines on the AWA website.

2021 AWA Annual General Membership Meeting and Conference

As we begin preparing for this fall’s AGM & Conference in Fort Collins, CO. we learned that Dr. Keith Belk, professor, and head of the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University, was recently granted the American Meat Science Association 2021 International Lectureship Award.

Although the AMSA typically gives the International Lectureship Award to individuals outside the United States, Belk becomes the eighth American – and the second person from Colorado State University – to receive it. Animal Sciences Professor Temple Grandin was the first, honored in 2020.

Dr. Belk is playing a key role as we plan and prepare for the conference this fall. Additionally, several of the faculty members at CSU will be giving presentations, including Dr. Belk and Dr. Temple Grandin.

Whether you’re interested in something for yourself or a gift for your customers, we have several items to choose from. With each purchase you are helping support your association and proudly support this great Wagyu breed.
