Membership in the American Wagyu Association continues to grow at a record pace.  We are averaging better than 31 new members a month compared to last year’s average of 20.4. There’s never been a better time to be a Wagyu breeder.

The Countdown to the Annual General Membership Meeting & Conference in Fort Collins, CO has begun.  It’s time to register for the conference and make your hotel reservations. Read below for more information on registration, sponsorship, and advertising opportunities.

Our featured speaker this week is Dr. Bucky Gwartney, United States Department of Agriculture.
 
Bucky Gwartney is an International Marketing Specialist with the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service.  He is responsible for the development and oversight of red meat standards, which include the beef yield and quality grades, among other standards, and serve as a technical expert on many red meat related activities within USDA.  He also serves as the USDA representative on several international standards organizations.
 
He attended Oklahoma State University (OSU) where he received a B.S. in Agriculture, Animal Science and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Animal Science/Meat Science from the University of Nebraska.
 
After a post-doctoral program at the University of Missouri, he joined PIC as a meat scientist, and later joined the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, working in the beef quality and safety research areas. 
 
Bucky is very active in meat industry associations, serving as past president of the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) and as a past Muscle Foods Division Chair at the Institute of Food Technology.  He was part of the research team that received the International Meat Secretariat Prize for Meat Science and Technology, is an AMSA Fellow and an OSU Graduate of Distinction.

Advertising Now Available in the 2021 Annual Conference Program
Proceeds go to support the Annual Conference, research, and other association programs. The conference program is mailed to the entire active membership of the AWA and used for promotion throughout the year at other events and inquiries.

Steps to Submitting Performance Data – #9
Inputting Weaning Data for Calves Part 2 (Click on screenshot thumbnails to enlarge)

Sex: If entering weaning information for a bull calf that has since been castrated, you can update the animal to a steer in the dropdown menu. The dropdown menu does not appear for females.

Weaning Date: Enter the date that the calf’s weaning measurements were taken. For adjusted 205 day weaning weights the AWA required age range for collecting weaning weights on calves is 160 to 250 days of age.

Age: Will auto-calculate the animal’s days of age at the time of the entered weaning date.

Weight: Enter the actual weight of the calf as measured on entered weaning date. Round to the nearest pound.

Adj: Adjusted 205 day weaning weight. Will auto-calculate if animal is within required age range of 160 to 250 days of age. Will not calculate if animal is below or above this range.

Temper: Temperament of the calf. Select the most appropriate option from the dropdown menu.

The North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE), Louisville, KY has announced a tentative show date for Wagyu, Wednesday November 17, 2021.  Show date for Wagyu at the National Western Stock Show (NWSS), Denver, CO is Sunday January 9, 2022. More information will be made available as it comes available to the AWA.
