Vol 2, No. 28

In the coming weeks I will be featuring many of the speakers scheduled for the AGM & Conference. Sponsorship opportunities, registration, and hotel information is now available. Be sure to contact the AWA office if you have any questions.

We are proud to have Dr. Temple Grandin as a featured speaker at this year’s Conference. A winner of the James Beard Foundation Award for Who’s Who of Food and Beverage America Dr. Grandin is a prominent proponent for the humane treatment of livestock for slaughter and author of more than 60 scientific papers on animal behavior.
Temple Grandin is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University.  When she was two and a half years old, she had no speech and all the symptoms of severe autism. Early intensive speech therapy enabled her to speak by age four. Her mother always encouraged her interest in art and urged her to draw many different things.  Good teachers and mentors were essential for Temple’s success.  Her high school science teacher challenged her with interesting projects where she had to figure out how to make things work.  When studying in school became a pathway to becoming a scientist, she was motivated to study.

An HBO movie titled Temple Grandin was made about her life and Temple was inducted into The National Women’s Hall of Fame and The Academy of Arts and Sciences.  Facilities she has designed handle over half the cattle in the U.S.  Some of her most important books are New York Times Bestseller Animals in Translation, Thinking in Pictures, The Autistic Brain, and The Way I See It.

Registration for our 2021 AGM and Conference is now OPEN!

This year the conference is in Fort Collins, Colorado and we have been working very closely with the Colorado State University Department of Animal Science to put on a very informative and fun conference.

The AWA will also be attending the 2022 NCBA Convention in Houston, TX this next February. If you are interested in participating with your own booth space during the Trade Show along with the AWA please give me a call early next week and I will be happy to share more details with you.

Steps to Submitting Performance Data – #7
Continuation of Inputting Calf Data in Birth Recording Table (Click on screenshot thumbnails to enlarge):

Once all birth recording information has been entered, click the ‘Validate’ button located on either the bottom left-hand or right-hand side of your table. This will check the information entered to make sure that there is nothing that is a required field that was left blank or any other errors.

An example of some errors that may appear are as follows:

‘The name has not been entered’ – At a minimum, the account herd prefix, unique ID number of the animal, and year letter code will need to be entered in this field.

‘The dam does not have an available CAR assessment’ – Dam does not have an available assessment for the year this calf was born. If you have not completed your assessment for the current year, go to Herd Mgmt: Inventory to enroll your female and mark the assessments of your active registered breeding age dams as complete to generate the assessments. If you are recording an older calf from a previous year and the dam does not have an assessment, please contact the AWA staff. Dam may have not been included that year as she may have not been eligible at the time of assessments (not registered, under 24 months of age and did not have breeding record entered, etc).

After resolving any errors, click the ‘Validate’ button again to update the information. If no further errors appear, the ‘Commit to Registry’ button should now become available. By clicking this, this calf record will be added to your herd, and a ‘U’ or unregistered number will be assigned to this animal. You will be redirected to a summary of the information you had entered.

Go to ‘My Account: View’ from the left-hand menu to return to your General Profile Information page. ‘Herd’ should be preselected in green from the row of tabs in the middle of the page. Several buttons are listed beneath the tabs to filter your herd list. Select ‘All’ from the buttons beneath to view your entire herd. The new calf should now be listed in your herd list.
