As I’ve reported the last few weeks new membership has been great. Growth of the Wagyu breed is at all time high. This week as I’ve traveled I’ve been stopped at the airport and a western store by people interested in the Wagyu breed simply because I was wearing a Wagyu vest. Consumer demand for Wagyu is fantastic with promise to be better.

Another feature of the newsletter is we will begin posting auction results. Scroll down to the bottom of the newsletter for the results from Triangle B Ranch last week.

Tips from the Staff – Safely Sending Samples

Martha Patterson, Herdbook admin and office manager here at the AWA has some tips for making sure your samples arrive at our office safe and sound.

The photos below are examples where the samples arrived, or in some cases, the samples were lost en route. We know you have spent time and energy collecting these samples and it's sometimes difficult and always time consuming to collect another one. Following the tips below will help to ensure your samples arrive in a timely manner.

Do not use a regular envelope, not even for one hair card. They are too easily torn and can get caught in the postal machines.
Use a padded envelope or a box. The flat rate padded envelopes or boxes are well suited for this purpose, but a small padded envelope works well too.
If you are sending a semen sample use an empty pen casing or some other durable casing to protect it from breaking. Then be sure it is in a sealed plastic bag so the semen sample won't dry out.
It is recommended that you use tracking with the post office or other carrier so that you can be sure your samples arrive and are not diverted to some unknown space and time.
Finally, while this might seem redundant, it is a good practice to collect 2 samples at a time and keep one as a backup. Most sample types can be stored for a reasonable amount of time and just need to be kept in a cool dry place.
