VOL 2, NO 19

Historically, beef breed association genetic evaluations relied solely on weaned and/or registered progeny but often did not collect information from females that failed to reproduce. Furthermore, performance data was often only reported for calves that were registered.

By contrast, inventory-based Complete Animal Reporting (CAR) functions around the premise of the collection and reporting on an annual basis; the production history of every cow in the herd and performance of every calf in the herd raised through weaning.

The purpose of CAR is to accumulate reproductive and performance data on animals in a producer’s herd, not to control which animals will be registered, which remains a decision of individual breeders.

This week we are starting a weekly series on the steps to report valuable reproduction and performance data to the American Wagyu Association.

Steps to Submitting Performance Data – First in a Series
This is the first of a weekly series on steps to report valuable reproduction and performance data to the American Wagyu Association. Each week we will walk you through the next step.

For those members enrolled in the Standard Herd option, the AWA whole herd reporting and performance program, submitting performance data starts with activation of your active cowherd in the Complete Animal Reporting (CAR) program.

An enrollment must be completed on-line through the AWA DigitalBeef program.

For herds enrolled in the Complete Animal Recording Program (Standard Herds) there are two inventory periods, Spring and Fall calving herds. Spring calving herds (January 1st – June 30th) and fall calving herds (July 1st – December 31st). Breeders will identify those animals that are active in the herd and those to be removed from inventory, add any new animals of breeding age not found on the inventory. These inventories should include all active females in the breeder’s herd for which they will be collecting production data, regardless if they raise a calf or not. Reproduction data on all females is important to establish genetic differences in females for this important trait.

Once you have completed your inventory (marked which females are active in your herd and which ones have been disposed with an appropriate disposal code) use the red submit button (Mark Complete) at the top right hand corner for an invoice to be created.

Be sure to mark active any female that will record a calving record during the year. This includes those younger than two years of age at the time you are completing your inventory.

Note 1: You will need to select each individual season tab (2021 Spring or 2021 Fall) to mark each season’s enrollment as complete. If your Spring season is correct, click the red submit button at the top right-hand corner. Go to your Fall tab. If your Fall season is correct, click the red submit button at the top right-hand corner.

Note 2: If you mark a season inventory as complete, but need to then add additional animals, you will need to go back into that season (2021 Spring or 2021 Fall) and re-click the red submit button for a supplemental assessment to be created for the added animals.
