An article in Drovers Journal pointed out that research by Temple Grandin and others have shown favorable relationships between animal temperament, performance and carcass quality. Genetic selection for calm temperament can help, but good handling can benefit health and performance in cattle as well. Other studies have shown that stress can have a negative impact on immunity and vaccine response in cattle. Low-stress handling has emerged as a key tool for preventing disease and protecting performance in cattle. In recent years there has been significant emphasis on animal handling, but we can still make improvements at every segment of the industry.

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, Merck Animal Health, National Beef Quality Assurance, and the Beef Checkoff have teamed up to present a series of workshops and tours to address Stockmanship and Stewardship.
Videos from a recent virtual conference are now available online for viewing by following the S+S Virtual Event link at www.StockmanshipAndStewardship.org.
