Workshop Series Explores Livestock Producer Options for Starting Small Processing Plants

BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension is seeking livestock producers interested in opening and operating their own meat processing facilities to participate in a workshop series. The series, “Enhancing Producer Resources to Build Small Meat Processing Capacity,” will include industry tours and case studies, regulatory presentations and financing and logistics discussions.

“This workshop series is designed to give livestock producers who are considering becoming involved in a meat processing business an inside look at small meat processing plants and have candid discussions about what it takes to both start up a new business and keep it running,” says Christina Bakker, SDSU Extension Meat Science Field Specialist.

Interested participants should be willing to travel to tour locations in South Dakota and commit to two workshop events and four virtual meetings.

Those interested in signing up should do so before October 15, 2021.

Those interested in more information or to sign up should contact Bakker at 605-688-5436 or Christina.Bakker@sdstate.edu.

Did You Know?
Breeding Inventories: Part 1

Did you know that you can keep track of your Semen Inventories in Digital Beef?

Go to Herd Mgmt: Breeding: Semen Inv to view or enter new records in your Semen Inventory. Any previously recorded straws will be listed in the Semen Inventory menu with the registration number of the sire as well as semen details including cane codes, straw quantities, etc.

To add a new straw, select the Add New Male button at the top of the screen. A new window should open with a list of active breeding age bulls in the account. A search box is also available at the top of the new window to enter the registration number of straws from out of herd sires that have been purchased.

If you enter the registration number of a male, the new window will redirect to the Semen Inventory Maintenance menu. The male’s information will display at the top of this menu. The table beneath will have the following detail fields to complete:

Cane Code: code printed on the semen straw

Tank: Tank Identifier that contains straws for this male

Canister: Canister Identifier that contains straws for this male

Straws: Quantity of straws from this male located in this tank/canister.

CSS: Straw is Certified Semen Services certified

Once the table has been completed, click the ‘Save Inventory’ button. The Semen Inventory should refresh and include the newly added semen record.
