NAILE is a Go!

We received news a few weeks ago that the North American Livestock Exposition (NAILE) will have a show. It will be modified from a normal NAILE, including being a participant-only event, but the show will go on. The Wagyu show due date was October 15th but we can still process a few more entries in the next few days.  Contact the AWA office for wagyu entry forms or DOWNLOAD THEM HERE.

Part 16: Pelvic Area

Pelvimetry is a useful culling tool to aid in the management of dystocia. Pelvic measurements can be obtained with a Rice Pelvimeter (Lane Manufacturing, Denver, CO), the Krautman-Litton Bovine Pelvic Meter (Jorgensen Laboratories, Inc. Loveland, CO), or the Equibov Bovine Pelvimeter (Ontario, Canada). The Rice pelvimeter is the preferred instrument to obtain pelvic measurements in cattle due to its ease of use, good repeatability, ability to read to at least 20 cm, and low cost compared to other pelvimeters. Pelvic area measured by the Rice pelvimeter is accurate and repeatable between and within veterinarians.

It is important that the person doing the measuring have a thorough understanding of the birth canal, pelvic structure, and reproductive tract. Practice and experience are necessary before accurate measurements can be obtained. The vertical measurement is the vertical diameter between the symphysis pubis on the floor of the pelvis and the sacral vertebrae. The horizontal measurement is obtained by determining the horizontal diameter at its widest point between the left and right ileal shafts. These measurements are read in centimeters and multiplied together to obtain the total pelvic area in square centimeters. (BIF)

National Western Stock Show Postponed

Press Release: The 115th National Western Stock Show postponed until January 2022 In News by Karen Woods September 14, 2020

Denver, CO – The Western Stock Show Association (WSSA) Board of Directors together with the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) management, has made the difficult decision to postpone the 115th National Western Stock Show by one year and to resume the event in January 2022.

The COVID-19 pandemic does not allow for the Stock Show to host the annual event and comply with the health and safety guidelines that are necessary to protect Coloradan’s and help stop the spread. More importantly, the projected environment through to the end of the year is too uncertain and therefore not reassuring enough to allow a traditional Stock Show to take place without potentially compromising the health and safety of exhibitors, visitors, and the public at large.
